The U.S. Department of Education that exists today was officially established in fiscal year 1980. The agency’s mission is to “to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access”. In addition to establishing, administering, and coordinating federal assistance for education, the agency is responsible for carrying out education policies and implementing relevant laws. The Department of Education has two primary offices that are responsible for contract awards: 1) Contracts and Acquisitions Management (CAM); and 2) Federal Student Aid (FSA).
